A world wide producer of mobile antenna solutions needed two gearmotors that would be able to point satellite dishes towards orbiting telecommunication satellites. These gearmotors had to be capable of providing extremely accurate and repeatable motion when the satellite was first calibrated, then stay completely still until re-position to a new location.

Since these portable dish systems are used in harsh outdoor environments (i.e. live news broadcasts, sports events, military sites or emergency response centers), the motors needed to be able to operate off a 24 VDC power source and endure severe conditions.

Custom Planetary PMDC Gearmotor Design

Bodine engineers designed and built a new solution based on the Type 24A-60P planetary PMDC gearmotor to meet the OEM’s requirements. The end solution involved custom wiring, mounting, shaft modifications and integration with the encoder. The gearmotor achieved high torque and fine control in a reduced-space package for the portable unit, as well as cost savings when placed side by side alternative products.
