Small Gearmotor Drives Large Format Printer

Brushless DC Gearmotor Solution for Media Feed and Rewind Systems
A leader in the print industry and OEM came to Bodine Electric with a problem: they needed a brushless DC motor and drive system that could power a large, heavy-duty metal cylinder for media moving (media feed) on their massive scale printer. Additionally, for each printing cycle, a redundant motorized rewind system was used to rewind the media.
Based on limited space and a requirement for ease of assembly, engineers at Bodine suggested the use of a Bodine Integra gearmotor. This new configuration allows the brushless DC motor and control to be combined into a single unit, which not only reduces overall system size by 50% in some cases.
The Result: A Custom BLDC Gearmotor Solution
By drawing upon the technical resources of bodineelectric.com, and working with our engineering team directly they were able to integrate a gearmotor that fit all of their performance needs.
Key design features included:
- Compact high-efficiency BLDC gear motor (type 22B/SR-Z) specially designed at low voltage
- velocity control (speed) and tachometer output, which reduces wiring and assembly time
- Factory-set current limit to control stall torque and protect device under heavy loads
- All-steel gear train engineered for durability and long service life, even during frequent stall conditions
A Robust Gearmotor Solution for Any Printing Need
This was one of the applications in which Bodine’s space-saving, efficient & reliable Integra brushless DC gearmotors excelled. By combining the motor, gearhead and controls in one package, Bodine helped the OEM simplify design, enhance reliability, and further reduce system complexity.
For large format printers, industrial media handling or other automation applications, Bodine BLDC gearmotor solutions are designed to provide precise performance, long life and easy set up.
